Interviewer 1: Sam, thank you for joining us today. Can you start by telling us how you got into triathlon?
Sam Dickinson: Thanks for having me. I started in sports quite early, initially focusing on swimming. I got into running during my school years and realised I had a knack for endurance sports. Triathlon was a natural progression for me, combining my love for both swimming and running. Cycling came later, but I quickly grew to love it.
Interviewer 2: What were some of the initial challenges you faced when transitioning to triathlon?
Sam Dickinson: The biggest challenge was definitely mastering the cycling aspect. It requires a different kind of stamina and skill set compared to swimming and running. Learning to handle the bike, especially in race conditions, was something I had to work hard on. Swimming in open water was also a new experience, but I adapted to it with time and practice.
Interviewer 1: Can you describe your typical training day?
Sam Dickinson: My training is pretty intensive. I usually start the day with a swim session early in the morning, followed by a cycling workout. After a break, I go for a run in the afternoon. Strength training and flexibility exercises are also important parts of my routine. Recovery is crucial, so I make sure to rest and fuel my body properly.
Interviewer 2: How do you stay motivated and focused, especially when training for three different disciplines?
Sam Dickinson: It can be challenging, but setting small, manageable goals helps keep me motivated. Having a great support team, including my coach, is essential. We regularly assess my progress and adjust my training plans accordingly. Visualising my goals and staying positive, especially during tough times, also keeps me focused.
Interviewer 1: With the Paris Olympics on the horizon, what are your expectations and goals for the event?
Sam Dickinson: My main goal is to perform at my best and ideally win a medal for Team GB. The competition will be intense, but I’m focusing on my preparation and maintaining a positive mindset. Competing in the Olympics is a huge honour, and I’m excited about the opportunity.
Interviewer 2: What advice would you give to young athletes aspiring to compete in triathlon?
Sam Dickinson: I’d say to stay dedicated and patient. Triathlon is a demanding sport that requires a lot of hard work and perseverance. Don’t be afraid to push your limits and try new things. Having a strong support system, whether it's a coach, family, or friends, is also important. Most importantly, believe in yourself and enjoy the journey.
Interviewer 1: Thank you for sharing your story with us, Sam. Best of luck at the Olympics!
Sam Dickinson: Thank you! It was great talking to you.
