The Interview:
Interviewer 1: Kate, it's a pleasure to have you with us. Can you start by telling us a bit about how you got into triathlon?
Kate Waugh: Thank you for having me. My journey into triathlon started quite early. I was a swimmer initially, competing in regional events. Around the age of 14, I was introduced to running by my coach. Combining the two naturally led me to triathlon. I loved the diversity of training and the challenge of excelling in three different disciplines.
Interviewer 2: That's fascinating! What were some of the initial hurdles you faced transitioning from swimming to triathlon?
Kate Waugh: The transition was definitely challenging. Swimming and running are quite different in terms of the muscles used and the type of stamina required. I had to work hard to build my endurance and improve my running technique. Cycling was completely new to me, so I spent a lot of time learning the basics, from handling the bike to understanding race strategies.
Interviewer 1: You've had some remarkable achievements. Can you walk us through your typical training day?
Kate Waugh: My training schedule is quite intense. I usually start my day with a swim session early in the morning, followed by a cycling workout. After a short break for lunch and some rest, I have a running session in the afternoon. I also incorporate strength training and flexibility exercises throughout the week. Recovery is key, so I make sure to get adequate rest and proper nutrition.
Interviewer 2: Balancing all three disciplines must be mentally demanding. How do you stay motivated and focused?
Kate Waugh: It can be tough, but I try to set small, achievable goals to keep myself motivated. Having a supportive team and coach is crucial. We regularly review my progress and adjust my training plans as needed. Visualisation techniques and remembering my long-term goals help me stay focused, especially during challenging times.
Interviewer 1: The Paris Olympics are just around the corner. What are your expectations and goals for the event?
Kate Waugh: My main goal is to perform at my best and hopefully bring home a medal for Team GB. The competition will be fierce, but I’m concentrating on my preparation and staying positive. Representing my country is a huge honour, and I’m excited about the opportunity to compete on such a big stage.
Interviewer 2: We're all excited to see you compete! What advice would you give to aspiring triathletes?
Kate Waugh: My advice would be to stay dedicated and patient. Triathlon is a demanding sport that requires a lot of hard work and persistence. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try new things. Find a good support system, whether it's a coach, friends, or family, and always believe in yourself.
Interviewer 1: Thank you for sharing your journey with us, Kate. Best of luck at the Olympics!
Kate Waugh: Thank you! It was great talking to you.
