The Interview:
Interviewer 1: Alex, thanks for joining us. Can you start by telling us a bit about how you got into triathlon?
Alex Yee: Thanks for having me. My journey into triathlon started quite organically. I was originally a runner, competing in track and field events. My interest in cycling grew over time, and it was only natural that I combined the two. Swimming came later, but I quickly found a passion for the multi-discipline sport of triathlon.
Interviewer 2: Transitioning from running to triathlon must have come with its own set of challenges. Can you share some of those with us?
Alex Yee: Absolutely. The transition was challenging, particularly with swimming. It’s a completely different discipline that requires a unique set of skills and muscle groups. I had to work hard to improve my swimming technique and build up the necessary endurance. Cycling, although physically demanding, was easier to adapt to because I enjoyed it so much.
Interviewer 1: Your training must be quite intense. Can you give us a glimpse into your typical training day?
Alex Yee: My training days are quite packed. I usually start with a swim session in the early morning, followed by a cycling workout. After a short break, I’ll head out for a run. Strength and conditioning are also integral parts of my routine to ensure overall fitness and injury prevention. Recovery, including rest and nutrition, is crucial to keep my body in top shape.
Interviewer 2: Balancing three disciplines must be mentally exhausting. How do you stay motivated and focused?
Alex Yee: It can be mentally taxing, but I stay motivated by setting small, achievable goals. Having a supportive team and coach is invaluable. We constantly review my progress and make necessary adjustments to my training plans. I also use visualisation techniques and remind myself of my long-term goals, which keeps me focused, especially during tough periods.
Interviewer 1: With the Paris Olympics approaching, what are your goals and expectations for the event?
Alex Yee: My main goal is to give my best performance and hopefully secure a medal for Team GB. The competition will be tough, but I’m focusing on my preparation and maintaining a positive mindset. Representing my country is a huge honour, and I’m excited about the opportunity to compete on such a grand stage.
Interviewer 2: We're excited to watch you compete! What advice would you give to young athletes aspiring to take up triathlon?
Alex Yee: My advice would be to stay dedicated and patient. Triathlon is a challenging sport that demands a lot of hard work and persistence. Don’t be afraid to try new things and push your limits. Find a good support system, whether it’s a coach, friends, or family, and always believe in yourself.
Interviewer 1: Thank you for sharing your story with us, Alex. Best of luck at the Olympics!
Alex Yee: Thank you! It’s been great talking to you.
