The Interview:
Interviewer 1: Beth, thank you so much for joining us today. Could you start by telling us a bit about your background and how you got into triathlon?
Beth Potter: Thanks for having me! I actually started out as a track and field athlete, specialising in the 10,000 metres. After competing in the 2016 Rio Olympics, I was looking for a new challenge, and triathlon seemed like the perfect fit. It combines my love for running with swimming and cycling, which I’ve always enjoyed.
Interviewer 2: That’s quite a transition! What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when you switched to triathlon?
Beth Potter: The biggest challenge was definitely learning to swim efficiently. As a runner, I had the endurance, but swimming requires a completely different set of skills and muscles. It took a lot of hard work and dedication to improve my swimming technique. Cycling was also a new experience, especially learning to handle the bike at high speeds and in different weather conditions.
Interviewer 1: Your hard work certainly paid off. You’ve had some impressive performances lately. Can you tell us about your training routine?
Beth Potter: My training is very structured. I typically train six days a week, with sessions split between swimming, cycling, and running. Each discipline has its specific workouts focused on building endurance, speed, and technique. I also incorporate strength and conditioning sessions to prevent injuries and improve overall fitness. Recovery is crucial too, so I make sure to get plenty of rest and good nutrition.
Interviewer 2: Competing at such a high level must be mentally demanding as well. How do you stay focused and motivated?
Beth Potter: It can be tough, but I set small, achievable goals that keep me motivated. Having a supportive team and coach helps a lot. We have regular meetings to review my progress and adjust my training plan. Visualising my goals and remembering why I started this journey keeps me focused, especially on tough days.
Interviewer 1: With the Paris Olympics coming up, what are your goals and expectations?
Beth Potter: My main goal is to perform at my best and hopefully secure a medal for Team GB. The competition will be fierce, but I’m focusing on my preparation and staying positive. It’s an honour to represent my country, and I’m excited to see what I can achieve in Paris.
Interviewer 2: We’re all rooting for you, Beth! Finally, what advice would you give to young athletes aspiring to compete in triathlon?
Beth Potter: I’d say, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try new things. Triathlon is a challenging but incredibly rewarding sport. Stay dedicated, be patient with your progress, and enjoy the journey. Find a good support system, whether it’s a coach, friends, or family, and always believe in yourself.
Interviewer 1: Wonderful advice. Thank you so much for sharing your story with us, Beth. We wish you all the best for the Olympics!
Beth Potter: Thank you! It was great talking to you.
